JONATHAN'S BLOG: Adult Texting on the Rise
Jonathan McKee

Maybe it's because we've finally figured out how to type on that miniature keyboard... or maybe it's just so we can talk with our kids. Either way, adults are using their cell phones for texting more than ever before.

72% of adults send and receive texts now, according to a September 2, 2010 Pew Internet study. This is up almost 10% from last year.

Do adults text as much as teenagers? Ha! Nope. Teenagers text about 5 times as many messages per day as adults... and teenage girls age 14-17, who, as I reported in this blog a while back, average 100 messages a day, text 10 times as many messages as adults. (I know... I have one kid of my own kids in that category!)

Some interesting tidbits from that Pew study:

  • Adults who text typically send and receive a median of 10 texts a day; teens who text send and receive a median of 50 texts per day.
  • 5% of all adult texters send more than 200 text messages a day or more than 6,000 texts a month.
  • 90% of parents are more likely to have a cell phone than adults without children under 18 at home (78%).
  • 72% parents have slept with their phone on or right next to their bed, compared to 62% of non-parents.
  • The average adult cell phone owner makes and receives around 5 voice calls a day.
  • Women tend to make slightly fewer calls with their cell phones than men
  • African American and English-speaking Hispanic adults are slightly more likely than whites to own a cell phone
  • African American and Hispanic texters typically text more on average than white texters

A Preview of the 2010 MTV
Video Music Awards

There’s always a risk in trying to predict award shows; but when it comes to MTV’s Video Music Awards, I can offer a few guarantees: Tons of risqué humor, Lady Gaga dressed like a freak show, and girls shrieking when Justin Bieber...

Letters to God (Movie Clip Discussion)

Here's a new curriculum from our Movie Clip Discussion page using the wonderful new movie Letters to God. Check it out.

Main Point: It’s an amazing thing to point others to God—especially when “others” are your enemies.

The Movie Clip: “God is truth. And it’s your job, Tyler, to point them toward him. And if they turn to him, they find the truth. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful victory?”

Letters to God is a movie about an eight-year-old boy’s pain and unexpected triumphs in the face of brain cancer. One of the ways Tyler Doherty deals with his affliction is writing daily letters to God and...

Click, Grab, and Get Hunt

Here’s a great event for your group to go out and have some fun in groups together. It’s an easy event to invite friends to and to get to know each other better too.

Click, Grab and Get Hunt

Kind of like the Disposable Camera Rally on this Events page, this is a scavenger hunt where each team has a camera (disposable or not) and a vehicle to get around town in (with adult leader driving). Give them a list of items, worth different points, to get a picture of, get, or do. You can develop the pictures at a one-hour place and see results that evening, or develop the pictures for a PowerPoint slide presentation (many places will develop pictures on CD) the next week. Winners can be served pizza and pop first by losers.

For these points, take a picture of…
20 a tree in bloom
20 a farm animal
20 a "House For Sale" Sign
30 a license plate from Ohio or Kentucky

And the list goes on...

Acting Out (Game)

Here’s a fun idea from our Games With a Point page that can really help your students undestand and process how particular Bible verses or passages relate to their lives.

 Acting Out

We LOVE this game!  We divide our students up into groups no larger than 10 students.  We have preselected several Bible scenes or verses and each group has to come up with a modern day skit of that scene or the theme of the verses.  Everyone in the group must be in the skit.  We give them a time limit, usually at least 20 minutes, send a leader…
