New Resource: 'Hey There Delilah' Music Discussion including small group questions, a scripture passage and a wrap up
|
Music is a powerful medium. Kids listen to it daily. They know the
words, they are familiar with the videos- why not use this medium to start
Biblical discussions?
That's exactly what we've done. You've seen a few of these music discussions featured
in this EZINE lately- see those and MORE on our new
MUSIC DISCUSSIONS page!
AND- check out this new one from Lane Palmer using a hit song (#2 on the Billboard
Hot 100 chart right now) from the band the Plain White T's.
Dating/Relationships
PLAIN WHITE T'S - Hey There Delilah
July 16, 2007
Main Point of Discussion: Healthy relationships with the opposite sex should not
be based on selfishness and pure physical attraction.
The Music Video: Hey There Delilah
Plain White T's is a pop-rock/punk-pop band from Villa Park, Illinois that has released
four full-length albums: Come On Over (2001), Stop (2002 Fearless Records),
All That We Needed (2005 Fearless Records), Every Second Counts (2006
Hollywood Records/Fearless Records). Their current smash hit 'Hey There Delilah' seems
to be on the minds and mouths of nearly every teen in America. It is currently #2 on
the Billboard top ten.
At THE SOURCE FOR YOUTH MINISTRY we like to use pop culture references to start Biblical
conversation (just like the Apostle Paul used culture to start conversations about Jesus
in Acts 17). This music video might be a good discussion starter in some circles. Use
your discernment.
If you want, you can print out the lyrics (below) and give each student a copy to refer
to.
MTV.com has the video on their site for free right now and iTunes offers the video as a
download for $1.99. Ask the tech guy at your church how to play the video on a laptop
through a projector.
Introducing the Music Video:
Many of you have probably seen the video or heard the song called 'Hey There Delilah'
by Plain White T's. It is burning up the charts and getting uber airplay on stations
across the nation. Tonight we're going to take a closer look at the song and what it
has in common with a story in the Bible that could have been called 'Hey There Delilah'.
Pass out a handout with the lyrics on it.
Song Lyrics:
"Hey There Delilah"
Hey there Delilah
What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away
But girl tonight you look so pretty
Yes you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear it's true
Hey there Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice it's my disguise
I'm by your side
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me
Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good
Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
and we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame
Hey there Delilah
You be good and don't you miss me
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be making history like I do
You'll know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here's to you
This ones for you
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me.
Transitional Statement:
Talk to the group about why they think this song is so popular and how it seems to
connect with so many people. Then say something like:
"Hey There Delilah" has definitely struck a chord with many people for probably
many reasons. One of the stronger themes that's in the song is about his commitment
to Delilah and how much value he places on the relationship.
Show the video, then divide into Small Groups:
Let's go ahead and split up into our discussion groups to discuss this video, and
then afterward we'll come back together for a final word.

Inside Tips: YS Interviews Jonathan about How to Get Students to Show Up
|
An excerpt from Nathan Black's recent ChristianPost.com
article:
Youth leaders generally anticipate high attendance at planned events, but oftentimes
only 20 to 50 percent of the expected number show up, according to long-time youth
leader Jonathan McKee.
"I find that the majority of us sometimes have high expectations and maybe even try
to spiritualize it, [saying] 'We have this God-sized goal,'" McKee, author of the
new book Getting
Students to Show Up, pointed out in an interview with Youth Specialties.
Some of you might have heard Jonathan
train
on this subject at the YS conventions

don't worry. Youth Specialties just interviewed Jonathan about how to get students to show up.
